This work is about a young man Jude, a mason from a small provincial town who dreams of becoming a scientist. But he marries Arabella, a girl who has been pursuing him for a long time. However, Arabella soon leaves him. The hero falls in love with his cousin Susanna and introduces her to his former schoolteacher, whom she marries. However, being in love with Jude, she feels unhappy in her marriage. Susanna leaves her husband for Jude, and they begin to live together, soon having two children. Jude's ex-wife gives him their child to raise. Events develop tragically - Jude's first son kills his father's two children from Susanna and commits suicide. The family's calm life is interrupted by a chain of tragic events.
