In 1672 our rich Republic was attacked by France, England, Munster and Cologne. It was a war. To stop the advancing French army, the polders were flooded between Muiden and Gorinchem. The Old Dutch Waterline. In Nieuwerbrug was one of the five main posts of the line. Behind this Prince Willem III stored his army camp and headquarters. Because there was no fortified city here, redoubts were erected on either side of the Old Rhine. On the other side of the water line, where Fort Wierickerschans is now located, came a third ramp.
In addition to the beautiful panoramas, this application offers a lot of background information about the various events in the Nieuwerbrug from 1672.
