Description

The Inland Water Quality of Eastern & Southern Africa web application provides remote sensing derived water quality, land cover and land use (LULC) characteristics for Lake Victoria, Lake Malawi, and Lake Tanganyika. The freely available data is sourced from Landsat, MODIS, and Sentinel programs, providing a multi-sensor approach in assessing water quality of inland lakes.

Water quality parameters for observation include Chlorophyll a (chla), Lake Surface Temperature (LST), Trophic State (TS), Trophic State classified (TSr) and Secchi Depth (SD). LULC classifications include agricultural, forested, urban, bare lands, woodland, and grassland (open and closed) areas. Additionally, we have mapped floating vegetation (hyacinth) using optical (LS8) and radar (S2), NDVI for the basin, and made it possible to overlay TOPEX lake level data in graphs.

Access the water quality viewer visualize maps, plot time-series data and upload csv files with in-situ observations to compare with remote sensing observations. This platform supports users with the necessary information derived from remote sensing data to support catchment-related decisions. The work is sponsored by USAID and NASA.
