Description

Appsberg is an application that allows you to monitor your phone and calculate the Co2 equivalent of the use of your applications. This application is a real tool for keeping control over the use of your phone and reducing the environmental impact of your applications.

Why this application?

When you launch an application on your phone, it will in the vast majority of cases connect to the internet to retrieve information, data, which comes from servers located hundreds or even thousands of km away. For example when you go to Youtube to watch a video, your phone will connect to the Youtube server to fetch this video. The environmental impact is twofold.

On the one hand, the video is stored in a data center (a huge room containing computers for storing large amounts of data). These data centers operate 24/7 to provide the whole world with diverse and varied content. In France, data center consumption amounted to around 10 TWh in 2015, the equivalent of the electricity consumption of 2 million households. Storing each piece of data is expensive in electricity, and this electricity represents a significant environmental cost.

On the other hand, the network and all the infrastructure to carry data from the data center to your phone also consumes energy. As of January 1, 2020, more than 50,000 4G antennas were deployed in France. In 2015 still in France, consumption of network infrastructure represented 3.5 TWh

Take things in hand with Appsberg and see for yourself what is involved in using your phone and its applications.
Appsberg allows you to:
- monitor the equivalent of the CO2 consumption of each application
- track the time spent and the number of visits by applications
- make a weekly report on the use of your phone
- set goals and block the applications that consume the most power or on which you want to spend less time

Appsberg does not use your data and works completely offline. Your data stays on your phone and is not used for anything else.

The CO2 consumption estimates are calculated from the "1byte" model developed by the Shift Project.
