Description

The Sahtu Secretariat Incorporated (SSI) is a Designated Sahtu Organization (DSO) pursuant to Chapter 7 of the SDMCLCA. There are two classes of shares. Firstly, the 7 Land Corporations are the only Voting Members and secondly, the Individual Beneficiaries are Non-Voting members.

The Sahtu Secretariat Incorporated (SSI) has the obligation to implement the SDMCLCA and is the trustee of the Sahtu Trust and Sahtu Master Land Agreement Trust.
We undertake this work on behalf of all the beneficiaries of the Sahtu Land Claim Agreement.

SSl’s government to government relationship with the Government of Canada and the Government of the Northwest Territories impacts our operations and requires us to respond to a number of Land Claim initiatives.
Mandate to operate as a designated Sahtu Organization as described in Chapter 7 “Sahtu Organizations” of the SDMCLCA. Mandate to assist all members to negotiate and enter into arrangements with the Federal and Territorial Governments concerning the implementation of the Comprehensive agreement.
Mandate to undertake any other activities related directly or indirectly to the interests and concerns of its members with specific reference to the implementation of the Comprehensive Agreement.
Mandate to engage in and undertake any studies, educational activities or other projects and activities related to environmental impacts on the lands, air, waters and health of the residents of the Sahtu Region. Mandate to undertake discussions with industries and government whose activities or decisions affect the environment in a manner which adversely affects the interests of the residents of the Sahtu Region.
Mandate to assist and enable its members to intervene and participate in any hearings, environmental impact assessments, policy, or legislative reviews, or other decision making or review processes which relate to the environmental or economic interests and concerns of its members.
