Shams-e Tabrizi, also Schemseddin Muhammed Šams ad-Dīn Muḥammad ibn 'Ali ibn Malik Dād-i Tabrizi, literally "the sun of Tabriz"), was a Persian mystic of the 12th and 13th centuries. He was born in 1164 or 1185 as the son of the scholar Ali ibn Malik Dad in the city of Tabriz, which later gave him the suffix. He became famous through the collection of lyrical poems named after him Diwan-e Shams-e Tabrizi Rumis (1207-1273), whose friend and mentor he was. Shams-e Tabrizi died around 1248 and his tomb is in Choi (KHOY). Other spellings of the name are Turkish Şems-i Tebrizi and English Shams-e Tabrizi, Shems-i Tebrizi, Shams al-Din Mohammed and Shemseddin Mohammed ibn Ali ibn Malik Dad. The Sufi mystic Shams-e Tabrizi is often confused with Shams ad-Din Muhammad († 1310) because he spent most of his life in Tabriz, Azerbaijan.
