A brief biography of Sheikh Asim and his student Hafs:
The Hafs recitation from Asim is the narration or recitation of the Holy Quran by Hafs from his teacher, Imam Asim ibn Abi Al-Najud.

Imam Asim:
Asim ibn Bahdalah Abi Al-Najud Al-Kufi. It is said that his father's name was Abdullah and his kunya was Abu Al-Najud. Asim's mother's name was Bahdalah and her kunya was Abu Bakr. He is one of the seven reciters (of the Shatibiyyah recitation) and a distinguished Tabi'i (successor of the Companions). Asim's chain of transmission in the recitation ends with Abdullah ibn Mas'ud and Ali ibn Abi Talib. His chain of transmission is considered the highest after that of Ibn Kathir and Ibn Amir, meaning there are two men between Asim and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Asim used to teach Hafs the recitation of Ali ibn Abi Talib, which he received through Abu Abd al-Rahman. Asim died in 120 AH.

Imam Hafs:

He is Hafs ibn Sulayman ibn al-Mughirah ibn Abi Dawud al-Asadi al-Kufi al-Ghadiri al-Bazzaz (named for selling cloth), and his kunya was Abu Umar. He was born in 90 AH. He is known as Hafs. He learned the recitation through direct instruction and oral transmission from Asim, who was his stepson. Hafs died in 180 AH.
