The purpose of this tour is to explore the practices that enforced segregation in Seattle, a part of local history which is often unknown, ignored, or forgotten. Our goals are
To demonstrate that segregation in Seattle was de jure, not de facto - in other words it was created by law, and did not happen by accident.
To acknowledge that the practices, systems, and institutions that enforced segregation are directly correlated to the current 20:1 racial wealth gap favoring white families to Black families in Seattle.
To recognize the resilience of Black people and other people of color, who have always resisted and formed complex and vibrant communities despite these obstacles.
To witness displacement and gentrification and the harms these events cause
To encourage you to consider how you fit into this story past, present, and future, and find ways that you can engage to produce positive change.
