Description

A mattress (also known as a mattress or bed) is a manufactured product that is used for sleeping or lying down, consisting of cloth or plastic, containing cotton, foam rubber, and covered with an outer cloth or mattress. [1]

In English, mattress is called mattress which comes from Arabic, "matrah" which means "to throw" or "the place where something is thrown". During the Crusades, Europeans adopted the Arabic method of sleeping on pillows thrown on the floor, and the word matera eventually came down to Middle English via the Romance languages
In Neolithic times, humans slept only on the ground. [3] Then evolved to be more innovative using a base of leaves and tree branches to avoid dirt and pests. [3] [4] Over time, animal skin was used as a base and sewn as the filling to use as a pillow. [3] Then in 3600 BC beds made of goatskins filled with water were used in Persia. [5] After that, entering the year 3400 BC the Egyptians slept on coconut branches piled in the corners of their homes. [5] In 200 BC mattresses in Ancient Rome consisted of cloth bags filled with grass, straw, or wool. [5]

Entering the 15th century, during the Renaissance, mattresses were made of straw and feathers that were infused with coarse lice, and covered with velvet, brocade, or silk. [5] Later in the 16th and 17th centuries the mattresses were filled with straw or down and placed over the bed which consisted of a wooden frame with latticeworks support of rope or leather. [4] Then more developed again in the early 18th century mattresses filled with cotton or wool. [4] A German named Heinrich Westphal, discovered the inner spring matress, a mattress with a spring construction on the inside. However, his brilliant invention began to gain popularity 60 years later. [3]

In 1926 Dunlop introduced a technology that vulcanized latex rubber to latex foam which became widely used as pillows and mattresses. [4] By the 1930s Innerspring mattresses and layered foundations became widely used, and artificial fillers became common. [4] Then it developed in 1940 into a water mattress made of vulcanized rubber covered with a cloth. [4] Uniquely, this mattress is able to adapt to the shape of the human body resting on it and makes sleep much more comfortable. [4] In the 1960s the modern waterbed was introduced and gained its first widespread use. [4] In 1970 NASA created the material that has become known as memory foam. [6] In the 1980s, the emergence of air mattresses that use an air bag as the support structure. [3] 1992 Tempur-Pedic introduces a mattress made of memory foam. 1992 Fibrelux introduced a mattress made of rubber coir.
