The competition is played in the knockout system with 92 teams, 80 of which enter the first phase, and the teams competing in the Libertadores, as well as champions of the Brasileirão Série B, Copa do Nordeste and Copa Verde, and the 9th placed team in the Brasileirão 2022, enter directly into the third phase. First and second phases are played in a single game. In the first phase, in the event of a draw, the club best positioned in the National Club Ranking advances. In the second phase, if there is a tie, the place will be decided on penalties. From the third phase onwards, the clashes are always round-trip games. In case of equal scores after two matches, the tiebreaker criteria are:

1) goal difference,
2) penalty shootout.
