Description

WWWJDIC Lite is a simple app for people with a good command of Japanese who want to read Japanese content on their Android phone and look up words without leaving their app.

WWWJDIC Lite includes all the dictionaries from WWWJDIC, so it has definitions in English, German, French, Russian, Swedish, Hungarian, Spanish, Dutch, Slovenian and Italian. Just tap on the dictionary name at the top of the expanded window to select the dictionary you want to use. It works with romaji (romanized Japanese) too if you check the appropriate checkbox.

How to look up a word depending on your Android version:

Android 6 (Marshmallow) and above:
You never have to start the app, and doing so won't have any effect. Just highlight a word, click on the 3 dots of the pop-up menu and then on "WWWJDIC LITE" to look up a word.

Android 5 (Lollipop) and below:
You must start the app to be able to use it. Once it is started, you can look up a word by copying it.

Google Translate offers a similar functionality with the "tap to translate" feature, however it only shows one word for the translation which is not enough. With WWWJDIC Lite you will get the first 5 results from the great WWWJDIC online dictionary.

WWWJDIC results are also much better than Google Translate that tends to do very literal translations. For example with 器物損壊 :
- Google translate: vessel damage
- WWWJDIC: (n) {law} property damage (not including ships, buildings, planes and documents)

I made this app for myself first but I thought that other people may find a use for it so here it is!

If you want a complete dictionary app where you can type in words, see kanji definitions and more, I recommend "WWWJDIC for Android" that is excellent.

Many thanks to Jim Breen's excellent WWWJDIC online dictionary that I have been using for years. It is the reference for anyone who learns Japanese.
