Kitab al-Ibanah 'an Usul al-Diyanah is claimed as a proof for the Wahhabi group who say that the thought of al-Imam Abu al-Hassan al-Ash`ari went through three phases of development in his life. It must be acknowledged that al-Imam Abu al-Hassan al-Ash`ari in the book of al-Ibanah and some other books are also attributed to him following a different methodology from the books he had written.

In the book of al-Ibanah, al-Imam Abu al-Hassan al-Ash`ari followed the tafwidh methodology followed by the majority of Salaf scholars in relation to the verses of mutasyabihat. Based on this, some groups understand that al-Imam Abu al-Hassan al-Ash`ari has actually left his second madhhab, which is Ibn Kullab's madhhab, and is now switching to the Salaf methodology.
